Women in Africa and the Diaspora: “Waist Beads”

The growing popularity of waist beads as a trend in the West has led them to take on their own meanings and interpretations. Now, many women wear them as a form of personal expression or as a fashion statement. Although waist beads are not limited to any race, culture, or country, it is still very important to know and understand the significance of waist beads within African cultures.

Waist beads have a long history in Africa dating back to ancient Egypt and are worn for various reasons and purposes. They are a symbol and celebration of womanhood, sexuality, femininity, fertility, healing, spirituality, body shaping, first menses, protection, seduction, and wealth amongst other things. The meaning of the colors and different shapes of beads varies with every tribe and they can be thought of as a visual dialect. Each bead, color, and shape relays a different message depending on the receiver.

It’s taking a form of contempt for women – even a hatred for women – and internalizing it by saying, Yes, those girls are awful, but I’m special, I’m not like that, instead of stepping back and saying, This is a lie.
…
The real meaning of “I’m not like the other girls” is, I think, “I’m not the media’s image of what girls should be.” Well, very, very few of us are. Pop culture wants to tell us that we’re all shallow, backstabbing, appearance-obsessed shopaholics without a thought in our heads beyond cute boys and cuter handbags. It’s a lie – a flat-out lie – and we need to recognize it and say so instead of accepting that judgment as true for other girls, but not for you.”

- “I’m not like the other girls”, Claudia Gray (via caitsmeissner)

thefader:

Seventeen-year-old Amy Kabba paces the stage of an East London dive in short-shorts and vertiginous ankle boots, working the crowd to perfection with perky between-song banter and a swagger that could fill arenas. Running through her set, which includes the Jamaican-inflected, booty-winding hooks of “Ride or Die” and the two-step-influenced summer jam, “Find a Boy,” she stirs a melting pot of pop. Kabba, who performs as A*M*E, knows her songs are good—a track she co-wrote debuted at number one in Korea, care of K-pop girl group f(x)—and with a T-Pain collaboration already in the can, she has her sights set on chart conquests of her own.

Delphine Fawundu led a group of 5 burgeoning female Nigerian photographers in a 3-day self-portrait workshop this past August 8-10. The workshop was a part of Fawundu’s artist residency at the African Artist Foundation in Lagos, Nigeria.

She began the workshop by introducing and exploring the self portraiture of other women photographers like Renee Cox, Mfon Essien, Helen Amouzou and Majida Khattari as well as her own work.

These examples proved to be perfect inspiration for the women in the workshop as it sparked their creative eye and they set out to create their own projects.

Joel Mwale - Water No Get Enemy

The late Nigerian Afro-Beat King Fela Kuti said in song “ Water no get enemy” to describe the omnipotent importance of human life’s most basic commodity, water. But in one rural Kenyan community, clean and affordable drinking water did have an enemy. The local municipality had routinely failed to provide a reliable source of water for Joel Mwale’s community.

After being hospitalized for drinking contaminated water, Mwale was struck with the idea for a business. The 19 year old decided to use his live savings, $95 saved over a period of 8 years, and a bit of basic engineering to launch Sky Drop Enterprises. Mwale built a boar-hole that carried useable groundwater to almost 5,000 households in his community. But he didn’t stop there. Inspired by Coco-Cola’s Disani brand filtered water he stared a bottled water business with the goal of bringing safe and reliable drinking water to even more people in Kenya. Purchasing a tank that collects rain water and then investing in an ultra violet filtration system he opened a small bottling plant and began offering his Sky Drop filtered water to the public for almost half the market price.

With ingenuity, love for community and hard work Joel Mwale’s business continues to grow employing dozens of his neighbors.

He says, “Information is available through technology, and we are a generation that is more empowered than any other generation I think our level of responsibility is also the highest. When you look at how the youth are engaging themselves young people have stopped saying the government will do something . People are now taking their own initiative to start their own business to solve the challenges in our communities.”
